The holidays in Central Texas bring family in from out of town, friends dropping by, and a calendar that fills up fast. If the thought of guests walking through your door makes you want to shove everything into the nearest closet, you are not alone. The good news is that getting your home guest-ready before the holidays does not require a full renovation. It takes a plan, a few focused sessions, and a willingness to start early. Here is the approach I share with clients.

Start Early With a Guest-Ready Walkthrough

About four weeks before your first guests arrive, walk through your home like a visitor would. Start at the front door and move through every space they will use. Carry a notepad and write down anything that makes you wince. Common trouble spots include:

  • The entryway or drop zone, where shoes, bags and mail pile up
  • The guest room that has quietly become a storage room
  • The guest bathroom cabinet
  • The coat closet
  • The kitchen counters and pantry

Then put each item on your calendar. One space per evening or one per weekend is much easier than trying to do it all the day before.

The Entry and Coat Closet

First impressions happen here. Clear out the coat closet so guests have somewhere to hang a jacket, even if our Texas winters only call for a light one. Remove coats that no longer fit, umbrellas that are broken and anything that does not belong. Add a few empty hangers and a small bin or basket for guests' bags.

For the entry itself, give each family member one hook and one basket or cubby. Mail goes into a single tray, not across the counter. A small bench with shoe storage underneath can transform a cluttered doorway.

A Guest Room That Feels Like a Welcome

Many guest rooms spend eleven months a year as the overflow room. If yours is holding boxes, off-season clothes and projects in progress, now is the time to sort.

  1. Clear the surfaces. The bed, nightstand and dresser top should be empty except for a lamp and maybe a small plant.
  2. Free up closet space. Leave at least a section of rod and a few hangers open. If you must store items there, put them in labeled bins on the top shelf.
  3. Empty a drawer or two. Guests staying more than a night appreciate a place to unpack.
  4. Stock the basics. Fresh sheets, an extra blanket, a phone charger, a small trash can and the Wi-Fi password written on a card.

If the guest room doubles as a home office, corral papers and supplies into one closed bin or cabinet during visits so your guests are not sleeping next to your work.

Kitchen, Pantry and Guest Bathroom Prep

Holiday cooking means more people in the kitchen, and that is when an organized setup pays off. A few steps help:

  • Clear the counters. Move small appliances you will not use over the holidays into a cabinet to free up prep space.
  • Edit the pantry. Toss expired items and make room for holiday groceries. Group baking supplies into one bin so they are ready to go.
  • Find the serving pieces now. Pull platters, extra glasses and serving spoons out of storage and check them before the big day.
  • Create a self-serve drink station. Guests can help themselves without crowding the cook.

In the guest bathroom, clear the counter, empty the cabinet under the sink of anything personal, and stock extra toilet paper, a plunger, hand towels and a small basket of travel-size basics. A turntable under the sink keeps supplies easy to reach.

Keep It Calm Through the Season

Once your home is ready, a few small habits keep it that way:

  • Do a ten-minute nightly reset. Dishes in the dishwasher, shoes back in the entry, blankets folded.
  • Set up a gift staging area. One corner or closet for wrapped gifts keeps them from spreading across the house.
  • Keep a donation bag handy. New gifts often replace old things. Let the old ones go right away.

If the holidays already feel like a lot, you do not have to do all of this yourself. I help families in Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Pflugerville and Manor get their homes ready for guests every year, from a single closet to several rooms. There is no judgment, only a plan that works. See my organizing services for details.
